Program Activities

Art:
Free exploration with a variety of materials ranging from paint, watercolors, chalk, wood, and clay, to shaving cream and mud. Messy is a must!
Music/Movement:
Introduction to musical instruments, records/tapes/CDs and action songs. Activities involving body image, balance, tumbling, basic movement, and dance.
Dramatic Play:
Acting out stories and pretend play involving self, family, friends, and community; both spontaneous and directed through the use of a large variety of props.
Readiness/Block play:
Introduction to the alphabet through the “sound of the week” program, story dictation, numbers, colors and shape recognition and concepts, problem solving, and lots of free exploration.
Cooking/Science:
Introduction to food and nutrition through hands on snack preparation, and exposure to many types of food. Investigation and experimentation with plants, animals, insects, weather, seasons, and senses.
Outdoor Play:
Activities involving climbing, swinging, riding and running, sand box, and sensory table. Come play on our one of a kind train!
Community awareness: Various field trips, guest speakers, and parent participation.

Journals

Your child should have a spiral notebook in the color that corresponds to their group to keep at the school. The children will be using these in the readiness room throughout the year for drawing and story dictation.

Sharing

Each child will be assigned a sharing day by their teacher. Sharing items should relate to the theme/letter of the week. Sharing items should be brought in a paper bag with your child’s name on it and placed in the bin provided for their group first thing in the morning. Encourage your child to be prepared to give hints about what they have brought. Remember, a story about a special event or a picture they have made is also worthwhile to share. Please don’t send something valuable. Super hero toys are not appropriate for sharing. Gun, swords, and toys that can hurt another child are not allowed! Please leave all other toys at home; we have lots at school to play with!

Field Trips

Our curriculum includes several field trips throughout the year to support the themes we are studying. A sign-up poster will be displayed containing any information regarding the field trip as well as any costs involved. Your signature will be required to give your permission for your child to attend. We rely solely on parent volunteers for transportation to these events so please sign-up to drive if you can. Remember to dress your child in their Training Wheels t-shirt for these outings. Please leave all other toys at home; we have lots at school to play with!

Parent Conferences

The staff is always happy to discuss with you the progress, problems, and activities of your child; however, no formal parent conferences are held. Most communications can be done at arrival and dismissal time provided it does not interfere with the teacher’s relationship with the other children in his/her care. If a formal conference is desired an appointment can be made with your child’s teacher. If there are any problems or changes going on at home please let us know. Many times your child’s behavior at school reflects these changes. We want the time spent at Training wheels to be meaningful and fun for you and your children.

Children’s Files

Each child has a file located next to the sign-out desk. Please check here daily for calendars, notices, and communications from the staff as well as other parents.

Cubbies

Each child will have his/her own cubby with their name on it. If you choose, you many also place their picture inside to help your child identify their cubby. Completed artwork will be placed in the smaller cubby. The larger cubby will be shared and is used to store extra clothes in the bucket provided.

Nap/Rest Time

Nap time is from 12:45 pm to 2:45 pm. Children need to bring a small pillow with their name on it, crib sheet, blanket, and any special item the child sleeps with. All bedding should be washed weekly. Children are not allowed bottles or pacifiers at any time for health reasons.
